Sarasota’s waterfront looks good from the shore, but it’s better from the middle of the bay. Our Sarasota boat tours run out of our Holmes Beach marina and cover the same water the city looks out on — a private dolphin tour, a sunset cruise, or both worked into one trip. You don’t need your own boat or a Sarasota marina slip to get out there. We bring the boat, the captain, and the local knowledge; you bring the group.

What You’ll See on a Sarasota Dolphin Tour

Bottlenose dolphins aren’t a maybe out here. Sarasota Bay is home to one of the most studied dolphin populations anywhere in the world — the Sarasota Dolphin Research Program, based at Mote Marine Laboratory, has followed the same resident community since 1970, now tracking six generations of the same families. It’s the longest-running study of a wild dolphin population on record, and it exists because these dolphins actually live here instead of just passing through. On a private tour we work the edges of the flats and passes where they feed, and it’s common to sit with a pod for a while as they work a school of bait right off the bow.

Manatees turn up in the same calm water. They favor the same shallow bays and canals, grazing seagrass beds along the edges where the current runs slow, and Save the Manatee Club recommends staying in deep channels and giving them a wide, quiet berth if you spot one — advice we already build into how we run these trips.

Sunset Cruises on Sarasota Bay

If the dolphins are the daytime draw, sunset is the evening one. We time the cruise so you’re on the water as the light turns gold over the bay, no fishing and no fixed itinerary — just finding a good spot and staying there while the sky does its thing. It’s an easy add-on to a Sarasota weekend, and it works for a couple, a family, or a group that just wants an hour on the water without a rod in hand.

Getting to Us from Sarasota

We’re not docked in Sarasota itself. Our marina is in Holmes Beach, about 40–55 minutes (around 20 miles) up the coast from downtown Sarasota — a straightforward run up Gulf of Mexico Drive. Plenty of our Sarasota guests pair the trip with a stop at St. Armands Circle or Mote Marine’s Sarasota campus on the way through, and turn the boat tour into a full day out.

None of this requires any boating or fishing experience. What to Expect on the Water

Every excursion is private, so it’s your group on the boat, not a mix of strangers split across a bigger charter. Bottled water and a cooler with ice are included on every trip, and your captain will point out what you’re looking at along the way — which pass you’re idling through, which flat the dolphins are working, why the light does what it does right before the sun drops.
