Sheepshead caught near Anna Maria Island

Sheepshead

Also called: Convict Fish

Sheepshead are the striped, human-toothed bandits of the dock pilings and bridges — masters at stealing bait. Catching them takes a sharp eye and a quick hookset.

They school up thick around structure in the cooler months, and the reward is some of the sweetest fillets in the Gulf.

How we catch Sheepshead

We fish sheepshead with shrimp and fiddler crabs tight to docks, bridges, and rock piles on inshore and nearshore trips.

Outstanding eating — sweet, white, and flaky — well worth the work of cleaning them.
